The Brass for Africa charity has been presented with a President's Award from the International Trombone Association

The work of the Brass for Africa Charity, which undertakes pioneering intervention in making a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people through brass music in some of the poorest countries in the world, has been recognised by the presentation of a President's Award from the International Trombone Association.

The ITA President is Joe Alessi, the renowned Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, with the award given in recognition of the charities ground breaking work in Uganda and Liberia.

Amazing

Brass for Africa ambassador Chris Fower told 4BR: "The International Trombone Association has members in every part of the musical world, so to gain this recognition for the charity is amazing — especially as it has been given directly by Joe Alessi.

It is further confirmation that the charity's work continues to make a positive impact. We are very proud and humbled by the award — and it gives us yet another boost to develop the charity's work further."

Award winners

The other 2017 President's Award went to Dee Stewart, Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at Indiana University School of Music.

The ITA Award went to the American trombonist Wycliffe Gordon with Ben Van Dijk, bass trombonist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Professor at the Conservatory of Amsterdam presented with the Neill Humfeld Award. The ITA Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to John Kenny.

It is further confirmation that the charity's work continues to make a positive impact. We are very proud and humbled by the award — and it gives us yet another boost to develop the charity's work furtherBrass for Africa
