Hepworth Band

6-Mar-2012

Conductor: Andrew Berryman
St Paul's Hall
Huddersfield
Sunday 5th February

HepworthDespite the poor weather a full house enjoyed a programme of music chosen 'by request' by the audience prior the event, and which saw the march 'Imperial Echoes' open proceedings with a real swagger under the excellent baton of Andrew Berryman.

By request

The popular ‘Hebrides Overture’ followed with Hepworth showing off their warm ensemble sounds to good effect, before principal cornet Alan Hobbins gave a fine account of ‘Nessun Dorma’.

Easy listening items followed with the trombone section of Ryan Watkins, Tony Robertson and Graham Starr enjoying themselves with, ‘I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free’.

The iconic Simon and Garfunkel ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ was played with a flowing pulse whilst Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s, 'An Untold Story’, was beautifully realised by solo horn Hannah Drage.

Superb contrast

'An Ashokan Farewell' carried the concert forward to the last piece in the first half which was music by the young Huddersfield composer Jonathan Bates, entitled 'Within the Paths Of Righteousness’ based on the hymn tune, ‘Crimond’.

This proved to be a superbly contrasting composition that drew some excellent ensemble playing from the band.

Suave

J Ord Hume’s march ‘BB &CF’ got the second half underway with flugel horn Catherine Bentham producing a suave rendition of, ‘Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue’.

The theme tune to the film 'Dances with Wolves' was followed with more film music in 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Wonderful music

A quick run through of ‘Czardas’ brought us to wonderful music from the pen of Dean Goffin in a piece based on the hymn ‘The Church's One Foundation’, entitled 'The Light Of The World'.

‘Procession to the Minster’ brought an excellent evening’s entertainment to a close in rousing fashion, with just enough time for a lovely contrast of an encore with, ‘Deep Harmony’.
