Carlton Main announce new conducting team

Russell Gray, Ian McElligott and Sam Fisher to take musical leads at defending Yorkshire Regional champion.

Defending Yorkshire Regional champion, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery has announced a new conducting team ahead of their St George's Hall title defence.

Former Coldsteam Guards Director of Music Ian McElligott will take on the role of Resident Conductor after working with many of the country's leading bands, including Grimethorpe, Desford Colliery and Brighouse & Rastrick, who he led to the Yorkshire title in 2003.

Excited

He told 4BR: "I'm excited to be working with Carlton Main. I was delighted to accept the position and it's a thrill to lead such a talented group of musicians."

The band has also confirmed that Russell Gray (above) will lead them at Bradford on March 6th — a welcome return for the Scotsman who previously led them to top six finishes at the British Open and National Championship, as well as podium places at the Yorkshire Area, Scottish Open and All England Masters.

Delighted

Band Manager, Robert Browne told 4BR: "We are absolutely delighted with both appointments and we feel that with Russell and Ian, we have the perfect conducting team.

Ian brings with him a wealth of experience that has had an immediate impact on the band. Russell's pedigree at this level needs no introduction and we are looking forward to renewing what was a successful partnership."

Bandmaster

It was also confirmed that Sam Fisher will take on the role of bandmaster, working alongside Ian McElligott with musical decisions and band training.

Continuing with his cornet playing responsibilities he will help to bring a sense of continuity in what the band say is an exciting time with high profile engagements with the Rambert Ballet and the 'COAL' production tour in the next few months.
