Eikanger takes principal lead at Birmingham

Eikanger Bjorsvik principal cornet Dave Morton will be a featured soloist in two high profile concerts at Birmingham Conservatoire this weekend.

Eikanger Bjorsvik Musikklag principal cornet David Morton is currently in the UK working and performing with brass students at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Recital

This evening he will give a recital at the Bernard Brown Brass Ensemble Prize where the cream of the Conservatoire's brass chamber ensembles will battle to win the acclaimed award.

Meanwhile, on Friday he will be the guest soloist alongside the Conservatoire Brass Band where he will perform 'Jubilance' by William Himes and 'Someone Cares' by John Larsson arranged by Ray Steadman Allen.

Directed by Ian Porthouse, the Conservatoire Brass Band will also perform works by Gavin Higgins, Fumiko Miyachi and Jacob Larsen.

Great admirer

Ian told 4BR: "I've been a great admirer of David's playing for such a long time now — and it's great that he has been able to come over from Norway to spend time inspiring our students. His playing is not to be missed."

The weekend is rounded off on Sunday with a performance by the Conservatoire Brass directed by Chris Houlding on works by Tom Harrold, Mark Anthony Turnage and the MD himself.

Wonderful experience

Chris told 4BR; "It's been a wonderful experience for the students to enjoy working alongside such a talented performer. David is an outstanding musician and I'm sure he will also delight the audiences with his solo playing on both nights."

He added: "Sunday is a very different occasion though, with the opening item 'Icebreaker', by young Scottish composer Tom Harrold, a work that will certainly raise the roof of the Adrian Boult Hall.

That's followed by my own 'Masque', based on themes from Purcell's 'Dioclesian' and Mark Anthony Turnage's iconic 'Set To', a Bacchanal written for London Brass in 1992.2
