Road to a Littlemore lasting recognition

Well known brass band historian Allan Littlemore joins a list of local banding greats in having his name in the postcode book...

Littlemore Raod

One of the banding world's best known administrators and historians will be remembered for generations to come thanks to a new housing development in the village of Elworth — the historic home of Foden's Band.

Official history

Allan Littlemore was for many years the Foden's Band Manager and wrote the excellent official history of the band on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

He was also the author of the indispensable Rakeway Brass Band Yearbooks and has provided numerous brass band publications with articles and features.

Cricket

However, his other passion has always been cricket (he modestly told 4BR that he was a tricky medium pacer, sturdy batsman and eagle-eyed umpire!) — a love that saw him take a leading role in helping raise £45,000 for the purchase of the land on which the local Elworth Cricket Club had played since 1927, from three distant relatives of Edwin Foden, founder of the truck company and famous band.

Although thrilled at the honour of being immortalised at 'Littlemore Road' — Allan is even more delighted that Elworth village now has streets named after people who gave so many people so much pleasure in his life-long passions.

Great company

He said: "This latest development will see streets named after 15 fine local cricketers and the three relatives to go alongside the great Foden's players and conductors already commemorated in Rimmer Grove, Halliwell Court, Webb Close, Teddy Gray Avenue, Shergold Close and Harry Mortimer Way in another part of the village. That's great company to be in!"
