World Rankings: December update

Grimethorpe make significant strides following their Brass in Concert Championship win.

The latest World of Brass — 4barsrest.com Rankings show quite a few changes near the top following the latest spate of contests around the banding world, with Grimethorpe Colliery the most significant mover, up five places following its return to winning ways at the Brass in Concert Championship a fortnight ago.

Stavanger Brass’s victory at the Norwegian equivalent — Siddis Brass — sees it re-enter the top 20, while there are also notable moves for newly-crowned national champions de Bazuin (Netherlands), Lyngby Taarbaek (Denmark), Windcorp (Sweden), Brass Band Oberösterreich (Austria) and Murley Silver (Northern Ireland).

The other contests held since the last update are:

Pogson Bray Trust — won by Elland Silver;
Wansbeck's Entertainment — won by Fishburn;
NWABBA Rochdale Contest — won by Milnrow;
Wychavon Festival — won by Unite the Union;
SWBBA Torquay — won by Verwood Concert Brass;
Borders Entertainment — won by Tullis Russell;
Kippax Entertainment — won by Strata Brass;
US Open — won by Fountain City;
Brass Factor — won by Hebden Bridge.

The next update will be at the end of 2014, when Cory will be crowned the world’s number one contesting band for a remarkable eighth year in succession. Will anyone be able to unseat the Welsh giants in 2015? After the year Black Dyke has enjoyed in 2014 there might be a few people in Queensbury relishing the prospect!

August 21 • Oxfordshire based (L&SC 2nd Section), Wantage Concert Brass are looking to recruit a new principal cornet. They have a busy schedule of diverse engagements and contests and is keen to secure an ambitious player to lead the cornet section.

August 21 • Matlock Band (4th section 2019) Has vacancies for brass and percussion players. Under our new Musical Director Chris Banks, we are re-building the band to hit the ground running in 2019. Key positions available include Soprano Cornet and Flugel.
