Busy times for Beaumaris

It has been a busy and successful few months for members of the Beaumaris Band.

Beaumaris

The band recently took part in a concert featuring them, Deiniolen and Menai Bridge in Bangor where each of the bands performed an own choice programme as well as coming together as a massed band.

Special occasion

The large audience were treated to spectacular performances of ‘Vivat Regina’ (William Mathias), ‘Sosban Fach’ (Gareth Wood) and ‘The Lost Chord’ (Sullivan), and the occasion was made more memorable as members of William Matthias’s family were at the concert to enjoy his music played again.

Tuba star and Deiniolen MD Gavin Saynor told 4BR: "The opportunity to play in a massed band of this size was a fantastic experience, and being able to conduct as well has to be one of the highlights of my musical career so far!"

Senior Trophy

Meanwhile the band is still in celebratory mood following their recent win at the Senior Trophy in Blackpool.

"We knew that we were capable of a great performance and had confidence in the fantastic preparation by Gwyn. But even we weren’t expecting things to go as well as they did!" said the band’s principal cornet Nicholas Hughes.

That promotion of young talent will also see several members of the Beaumaris Youth Band play with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales during July4BR

Belgian help

The band was helped on the day by a Belgian import—something that they are very grateful for.

Nicholas added: "One of the highlights of the performance was the lyrical euphonium solo, played by Glenn Van Looy. We had lost the services of our principal euphonium only a few weeks before the contest so Glen came in and did a fantastic job."

Thanks

MD Gwyn Evans was also thankful of the young Belgian star’s help.

"Beaumaris’s success and drive comes from our own successful youth policy but having Glenn, at only 18, as part of our performance was great as it reinforced our beliefs in promoting young brass talent. He’s now Welsh in everyway except his birth place!"

That promotion of young talent will also see several members of the Beaumaris Youth Band play with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales during July.
