Brass back on the national airwaves...?

It seems the sound of brass and brass bands is starting to make a return to the national airwaves at the BBC...

The sound of brass and brass bands is being heard again on the BBC...

The sound of brass and brass bands has been quietly returning to the airwaves of national BBC radio of late following the demise of 'listen to the Band', with the award winning A4 Brass quartet and Grimethorpe Colliery Band the latest to be featured.

In Tune

Fresh from being announced as the first brass ensemble to become part of the acclaimed '2018 City Music Foundation Artists' programme, the A4 lads were to be heard on Radio 3's 'In Tune' programme presented by Katie Derham on Tuesday 25th September, alongside author William Boyd and pianist Kirill Gerstein.

Top Brass

Meanwhile Grimethorpe followed the appearance of Cory on Radio 2's 'Top Brass' show presented by the 'Wizard of Oz' James Morrison. The show also contained a feature on the huge Durham Brass Festival and its 'Streets of Brass'

There is also a fascinating look at the history of the development of brass instruments by Adolfe Sax (including tales of rivals trying to assassinate him) by historian Jeff Miller — featuring some period instrument performances. It's rounded off by Grimethorpe led by Elgar Howarth playing his 'Hogarth's Hoedown'.
