Willebroek are the 2001 Belgium Champions after taking the title in Brussels

The Willebroek Band conducted by Frans Violet are the 2001 Belgium National Champions after winning the two legged contest in Brussels in fine style at the weekend.

Willebroek won both the set test section playing Jan Van de Roost’s “Albion” and the Own Choice section playing “…Dove Descending” to record yet another victory at the contest and secure their place as representatives of their country at the European Champions in Brussels itself in May 2002. They were awarded 276 points for their set work and 282 points for their own choice to give them an overall total of 558 points and a winning 6-point margin.

Second place went to Buizingen who tied with Willebroek on the set test section, gaining 276 points from the judges, whilst they came third playing “Diversions on a Bass Theme” by George Lloyd to just pip the Midden Brabant who had to be content with third place overall this year. They too performed Philip Wilby’s, “ …Dove Descending”.

Fourth place went to The Festival Band who choose to play “Partita” by Philip Sparke as their Own Choice and fifth place was secured by Kortrijk Band who performed Philip Sparkes, “Tallis Variations”.

The judges for this years contest were David Read, David Horsfield and Gareth Pritchard and each judge was enclosed in separate boxes and given 100 points to award to each performance in both the set work and own choice.

Many people had Buizingen ahead after the set work as they put in a fine performance and the judges agreed but could not separate them from Willebroek. The own choice however saw Willebroek play to their undoubted strengths with their choice and the euphonium playing of Stef Pillaert was outstanding. It will be interesting to see if they continue to choose the Wilby work for the Europeans next year, as they are capable of producing a very fine and mature performance on it.

So the title went to Willebroek and the opportunity to see if they can repeat their European win of 1993. The good news is that once again the work of Jan Van de Roost was well received both by players and audience and the overall standard of playing was up again from last year. Belgium will be putting up a strong challenge come May.
