All We Want for Xmas

Some bands get player prezzies for Xmas, whilst others have empty stockings.

All we want for Xmas

If you think it’s the season to be jolly—forget it. This is the season for more transfer requests than can be found in the nearest post box to David Beckham’s house.

Hard on the heels of the handful of Xmas wish lists on David King’s desk at Yorkshire Building Society comes news that moves are a foot in both Lancashire and Wales.

Just to remind you of what we’ve already heard.

Morgan Griffiths, solo euphonium of YBS has decided to “Take a Break” along with his sibling brother, Geraint, who by all accounts could be playing the bass trombone at Williams Fairey in the new year.

Fellow transfer seeker John Davies on Eb Bass we hear will be pumping it out on the backrow at Grimethorpe, whilst we have yet to have confirmation of where 2nd horn player, Dave Clegg will be doing the business come January. There may be one more “Please Santa” letter to come.

Meanwhile, Williams Fairey have a vacancy on solo euphonium following the resignation of Steven Miles. Steven informed 4BR that he was “unhappy” at the current situation at Fairey’s and that he has “not been enjoying his banding of late”. He did state that the highlight of his year or more at Fairey’s has been working under the direction of Howard Snell whom he holds in the highest regard, but it has been the occasions where he has not directed the band that he has found himself unhappy and feels that he needs a change in his banding environment.

Speculation is rife of who will now fill this important chair (no membership of Mensa is required to join the dots we think!) and who may go in the opposite direction.

However—just to top this we have been informed that Ian Porthouse no less has taken over as Principal Cornet at Williams Fairey forthwith, and that long serving Principal Cornet, Brian Taylor has moved down the line to take up residence as “Third Man Down”.

Ian Porthouse has been linked and has played with many of the country’s top bands including Black Dyke, YBS, Desford, Leyland and for the past year, Tredegar as well as directing Pennine Brass to the top section in Yorkshire.

Furthermore we have also been informed that Joanne Dean, the fine flugel horn player at Tredegar has joined Buy As You View Cory and will be playing with the band at the Regional Championships come 2002.

If we have any more information about any of these moves we’ll let you know. As for Mr Beckham—we tried to find where he’s going (and he is), but we’ll hold onto the information just a bit longer.
