In an exclusive interview with 4BarsRest, Jonathon Webster, the Managing Director of Fred Rhodes Ltd gave the reasons why one of the most successful sponsorship deals between a brass band and a commercial company has come to an end, with the announcement through us that Antoine Courtois SA and Fred Rhodes Ltd have closed their association with the 1999 Champion Band of Great Britain and current world ranked number one band, The Foden Band.
“We have decided to release a press statement through 4BarsRest as you were the first brass band media publication to reveal that we were drawing our sponsorship deal to a close.” Jonathan Webster also went on to categorically deny the rumours that the sponsors were pulling the plug on the deal because Nicholas Childs had left the band to conduct Black Dyke.
“Let me say right now—both Courtois and Fred Rhodes have been delighted at the partnership we have had with the band, but the deal was for a very specific three year period—the period agreed by the Arts and Business Pairing Scheme run by the Government. With this period at an end, we have to review our position and that is the only reason why the sponsorship package has closed.”
“All parties agree that the sponsorship has been a great success. The band has progressed and so have our two businesses. I’m sure Fodens will go from strength to strength—as will Courtois and Fred Rhodes. We have a great commitment to brass bands in general, and we will ensure this continues—we will also still be heavily involved with many of the principal players of the band in the development of new instrument models for instance. We wish Fodens every success, especially at the Area championships in Blackpool on Sunday."
The Full Press Statement is as follows:
Arguably one of the most innovative and successful sponsorships in modern banding drew to a close this month. This combined the worlds oldest instrument maker—Antoine Courtois SA, the Courtois sole importer Fred Rhodes Limited and the world’s number 1 ranked brass band, the Fodens Courtois Band (Brass Band World Rankings).
Three years of team work between these corporate and arts organisations has seen the perfection of a superb range of brass band musical instruments for Courtois and Fred Rhodes, and the re emergence of the celebrated name of Fodens.
The sponsorship deal was spearheaded in 1997 by Jonathan Webster, Managing Director of Fred Rhodes who combined his work ethic of producing the world’s finest brass instrument with his love of brass bands, with tremendous support from former Musical Director, Nicholas Childs and Philippa Cresswell.
With the support from Courtois and Fred Rhodes, Fodens have risen from 6th to 1st in the world rankings. Under the direction of Nicholas Childs, successes have included winning the North West Area on no fewer than three successive occasions, the richest prize in banding at the Harry Ramsden’s Entertainment Contest, the French Open, Brass in Concert and the magnificent National Championships of Great Britain win in 1999 that began the band’s centenary year.
With the support of Courtois and Fred Rhodes, the band have performed over one hundred concerts, including enviable international performances, produced ten commercial recordings and over twelve BBC broadcasts with a combined listening audience of over 10 million.
These successes impressed the Government funding bodies too, resulting in a generous Arts and Business Award donated over the three year period.
Coutois, Fred Rhodes and Fodens now progress to new opportunities; stronger and highly motivated to succeed in the competitive world of brass band music.
Specifically, Fred Rhodes continue to be involved with many of Foden’s principal players for financial sponsorship and the further development of new models. Future Fred Rhodes initiatives will certainly focus on brass bands and aim to provide genuine benefit to ALL sections of the brass band population including support to the youth market.
Courtois, Fred Rhodes and Fodens place on record their mutual appreciation of their respective contributions to a model modern day arts sponsorship success.
