New Champions in the Netherlands

Provinciale Brassband Groningen take first ever Dutch National title

Provinciale Brassband Groningen conducted by Siemen Hoekstra are the new 2002 Dutch Champions following their win at the Nationals on the weekend. It is the bands first ever win at the National Championships and in doing so they booked themselves a place at the forthcoming European Championships in Bergen as well as stopping the favourites, De Bazuin (Oenkerk) conducted by Klass van der Woude from making it a hat rick of wins and taking the title for the sixth time in eight years.

The band was awarded 97 points, two clear of the runners up from the adjudicators Philip Sparke, Durk Lautenbach and Tom Brevik for their performance of Derek Bourgeois commissioned set work, “Lac Leman”—a test piece that has been used at a number of European National Championships this year. The adjudicators were impressed with Philip Sparke remarking that he had “run out of things to say and that the work was played with such assurance—musically and technically”, whilst Durk Lautenbach remarked that it was a “great performance”. Tom Brevik wrote that “You created some marvellous atmosphere—Very good indeed”.

Third place went to De Waldsang conducted by Rieks van der Woude who could not quite repeat their triumph of 1999 and had to be content with the last place on the prize -giving podium. They have won the championship on 10 previous occasions since its inception in 1981, but on this occasion they were denied by Provinciale Groningen.

The First Section title was won again by Amsterdam Brass who beat Heman Zuidwolde the 1999 champions into second place with Excelsior Zalk , the 1995 champions in third. The second Section title was won for the fifth year in a row by De Lofkland whilst the Third Section went to Const. Huygens. The Fourth Section winners were Apollo.
