Youth Band honour Stalwart

Powys Youth Band say a big thank you to a great servant and get 6k of percussion as a bonus!


The North Powys Youth band last Saturday performed at thier annual cheese and wine Christmas concert. During the evening professional musical director Steve Pritchard-Jones paid tribute to Mr John Bennet who retired as band after 33 year of unpaid service as band manager.

John and his wife Helen where presented with a garden bench and a framed photograph. John a former police officer and tuba players joined Newtown Silver band in 1947 and today John is president of the band. Also a former member of the RAF Central Band. Today John is President of South East Wales BBA, Welsh Representative on the European BBA.

Also during the evening Miss Jean Webster was presented to the audience. She was until recently principal percussion with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She kindly donated a full sized professional xylophone, marimba and glockenspiel to the North Powys Youth Band to the value of roughly £6000. The bands percussion tutor along with principal percussionist Sarah Breese performed Kenneth Alfords The Two Imps. The performance brought the house down.

John has committed his whole life to his family and to banding and wherever he goes he spreads the word about banding in Wales.
