Young Scot off to Romania

Perthshire "Drum Up" Support for Romania as Grant Roper heads for the town of Cluj to support charity work.

On Monday 27 December, Perthshire Brass percussionist Grant Roper and two friends head off to spend 8 days in the Romanian town of Cluj. This is a return visit for Grant (19), who was part of a 16 strong group who spent two weeks in July working at the Daniel Centre there, which is a residence and training centre for adolescent boys who are too old to remain in orphanages. The Centre is supported by Blythswood Care, a Scottish charity who operate various social projects in Romania.

A major initiative operated by Blythswood is their annual "Shoebox Appeal", whereby shoeboxes are filled with small items of clothing such as scarves, gloves and hats, along with everyday items such as pens, pencils, papers, sweets and small gifts.

Boxes are targeted at specific age and gender groups, sorted, then sent out for distribution around Romania where the contents genuinely do bring happiness to residents in orphanages and those vulnerable folks who make use of other Blythswood facilities.

Band members were happy to contribute a number boxes to this years collection. From the Perth area alone, over 4300 filled boxes were donated, with an average contents value of around £12. Grant and his companions hope to complete the distribution of the last of the boxes in person, the bulk having been transported in early December.

The lads then hope to be part of the Summer 2005 group visit , when further maintenance and development work will be undertaken. This trip is scheduled to take place immediately that Grant returns from the Band tour to the Czech Republic in early July.

All at Perthshire Brass wish Grant, John and Mike a safe journey — and a happy New Year as they ring in the new not once but twice, at midnight Romanian time and again at 2am which of course will be midnight in Scotland!

Many thanks to Brian Roper
