Swainson leaves Bon Accord

Tony Swainson has left the Bon Accord Band after six very successful years.

The Press Release from Tony Swainson reads as follows:

I have parted company with the Bon Accord Silver Band after six successful years with the Aberdeen based outfit.

Joining them in January, 1999, they were in a state of crisis never having recovered from the death of their founder and long time conductor, Stewart Watson. They had dropped into the Second section by that time and were trying to rebuild. They achieved their goal of promotion the following month by winning the section and twelve months later matched this result in the first section paving the way for a return to the top flight.

Bon Accord are undoubtedly in a much healthier position now than six years ago but now have to make some brave decisions in order to maintain or improve their position in Scotland’s top flight. I wish them wellTony Swainson

Despite a number of successes over the last few years culminating in their highly creditable placing at last years Scottish Championships which resulted in their appearance at last month’s Scottish Open, they have often struggled to consistently match the overall quality of their Scottish rivals and the emergence of a few young players of exceptional talent has merely served to paper over a number of cracks that have appeared as others have moved on to more southern universities etc.

“Several of the senior players have remarked that their greatest memories in banding have occurred during the last five years. Certainly occasions such as three appearances at the National finals, including the Royal Albert Hall, as well as a hugely successful tour to Regensburg three years ago when the capacity audience in the concert hall were on their feet demanding more with the clock approaching midnight, will live long in my memory too.

It has been times like this which has made this decision terribly difficult. However, I have over the last year found my position increasingly frustrating and unworkable as I have met greater and greater resistance, by some members, to the suggestions that I have made for changes from within the band in an effort to maintain championship quality and status. I appreciate that this is something faced by some long term conductors having become perhaps over familiar to their band.

Consequently, and with great reluctance, the decision has been made to end my association with a band for which I have great fondness. Bon Accord are undoubtedly in a much healthier position now than six years ago but now have to make some brave decisions in order to maintain or improve their position in Scotland’s top flight. I wish them well.”
