New MD at Skelmanthorpe

John Hinckley is the new man at the helm at Skelmanthorpe.

John Hinkley

The Innovate Skelmanthorpe Band are delighted to confirm the appointment of John Hinckley as their new Musical Director.

John Hinckley’s track record is outstanding. From 1974 to 1992 John had an enviable reputation as the flugel horn player with the Brighouse & Rastrick Band. In the early 1990’s he had five years as Resident Conductor with the successful Marple Band. During this time, this village band established itself as one of the country’s best ensembles and during this period they achieved a remarkable run of success in the British Open Championships of four consecutive 4th places.

This was followed by a seven year period as the Musical Director of the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. Spectacular progress was made including winning both the Yorkshire Area Championships and the Grand Shield in 1999, followed by top placings at the All England Masters Championships. Recently John has been the principal conductor of the Yorkshire Imperial Urquhart Travel Band.

John’s values of achieving quality in all aspects of music tie in with the band’s values of outperforming expectations. The players are relishing the opportunity of working with him.President, Skelmanthorpe Band

John has been a regular visitor to Norway to offer his expertise in conducting, and he is looking to continue this alongside his new commitments at Skelmanthorpe.

Band President Jackie Ewart said “We are absolutely thrilled that we have been able to attract John to the band. John’s values of achieving quality in all aspects of music tie in with the band’s values of outperforming expectations. The players are relishing the opportunity of working with him”.

Les Beevers will continue to assist with the conducting role at the band, and this re-establishes an association with John from their many years together at B&R.

John said “I look forward with anticipation in joining forces with Innovate Skelmanthorpe Band and Les Beevers. The band has a very solid foundation, essential if success is to follow."

The band have ambitious plans for 2005 including a trip to the Swiss Open Contest in September. John's first contest with the band will be the Yorkshire Regional Championships in March.
