Cory celebrate

Members of the Cory Band recently took time off to celebrate their 2007 year of achievement.

Cory

On Thursday 20th December, members, supporters and fans of the 2007 British Open Champions, Cory held their presentation night amid the festive surroundings of the Tonyrefail Workmens' Club.

The players who took part in the performance that won this year's Open Championship were each presented with a certificate and all members were also given plaques and engraved heavy glass paper weights to mark the achievement of winning the Open for the third time since 2000.

Player of the Year

The individual award as Player of the Year went to Michelle Ibbotson, the band's star soprano cornet payer who was on sparkling form throughout the year.

Rankings Trophy

The band itself also showed off the new World of Brass Band Rankings Trophy presented to them a few days earlier at a concert in Huddersfield. The band ended the year top of the rankings for the first time since they had been published on 4BR and British Bandsman in 2001.

High spot

A high spot of the evening though was the presentation to Mr John Trotman, on the occasion of his having been a member of the band for the massive period of 70 years — following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and several uncles. He was presented with a beautiful cut glass bowl, suitably inscribed.

A long and enjoyable night of entertainment was had by all, with thoughts very much on 2008 and the opportunity to try and win the one trophy to have eluded the band so far under Robert Childs — the European Championship.
