Christmas Countdown — 2 days to go

You've read what 4BR wants for Christmas, so we asked someone else what they wanted for 2008 — Kenny Crookston, Editor of British Bandsman

Kenny Crookston is the Editor of British Bandsman and one of the most influential commentators on the current brass band movement. 4BR caught up with him before his Christmas break to see what he would like to see happening in the banding world over the next 12 months.

This is his 2008 wish list...

1. Contest organisers to give more thought to the appointment of adjudicators rather than just choosing whichever ones are available from a list in some cases, especially in youth contests, where it isn't unknown for some of them to be seven or eight times the age of many competitors.

There are hundreds of much younger musicians out there more than capable of doing the job and a youth contest would be a good breeding ground for the badly needed next generation.

2. Bands and conductors to finally realise that getting everyone except the bus driver to get on their feet after a performance in order to prolong the applause makes not a bit of difference to all but the least competent adjudicators.

3. Contest organisers to invite feedback from competitors re choice of test-pieces in subsequent years.

Competitors at band contests to realise that there is much more to be learnt by listening to other bands than there is sitting in the pubKenny Crookston, Editor, British Bandsman

4a. Competitors at band contests to realise that there is much more to be learnt by listening to other bands than there is sitting in the pub, thus enhancing their chances of success at the next contest and giving them a more valid opinion.

4b. Every contest organiser that has a venue that is nowhere near sold out to provide a free, unreserved area for competitors, thus giving them a valid alternative to the pub.

5. Bands in England and Wales to finally realise the long-term benefits of having a single controlling body for the organisation of the brass band movement.

Every other banding nation has one and the balance of power will continue to shift away from its roots as long as that is the case.
