King of Cologne

Brass bands are flourishing in Germany, with a little help form David King.

Cologne Concert Brass (CCB) is heading for a well deserved Christmas break after what has been a real challenging and successful year.

Founded in 1997 by Martyn Bennett and Sven-Mario Alisch the band has gone from strength to strength in its first decade, from the start focussing on the ultimate target of establishing a true British style brass band.

Powered by the ongoing sponsorship of ‘Fasch Instrumente’, importers of high quality wind instruments Cologne Concert Brass was able to relaunch it’s popular website, to establish an own youth band called Young CCB and to celebrate some musical highlights throughout the year.

First brass band contest

In May 2007 a tour to the first ever German brass band contest held in the picturesque town of Wurzburg culminated in winning the second highest section of the contest playing Philip Sparke’s ‘Triptych’ and Peter Graham’s ‘Renaissance’, a fine reward for the band and it’s musical director Heinrich Schmidt for the intense preparation period.

David King

The ultimate celebration of the anniversary and an appropriate finale to a decade of brass banding in Cologne however was marked by the Jubilee Concert on November 19th with Professor David King as the featured guest soloist.

Cologne Concert Brass has enjoyed a special relationship with David King, including some of his cornet playing at a workshop held in 2005, and since then the entire band wanted to welcome him as guest soloist in their hometown—a wish luckily to be fulfilled at just about the right time and with great style too.

Absolute highlght

Horst Pramschiefer, Secretary told 4BR: "David King provided the absolute highlight of an outstanding concert.

His soloistic contributions included ‘The Paragon’ by Edward Sutton and the ‘Harry James Trumpet Concerto’ arranged by Elgar Howarth and amazed all present especially when learning that David King just recently took up the soloist role again after a 15 years break.

His true and beautiful cornet sound coupled with breathtaking adaptation to the different styles caused standing ovations following the encore in the shape of ‘Over the Rainbow’ arranged by Ray Farr.

He added: "Cologne Concert Brass wants to publically thank Professor King for his repeated support and his wonderful contribution to their Jubilee Concert."

Inspired and motivated by this years experience Cologne Concert Brass will continue its journey in 2008 with two contests already scheduled; the Flemish Open Brassband Championships in Mechelen and the German Brass Band Championships in Ingolstadt and increased concert activities around the country and abroad.
