Santa brings Scotland an extra million in his instrument sack

Scottish schools to get extra £1m for musical instruments.

The BBC has revealed that Scottish schools will receive an extra £1 million to buy musical instruments for pupils.

Every child

The report stated that the Scottish Minister for Learning, Alasdair Allan said that every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument, whilst ministers will also set up a working group to look at music tuition fees, which can vary across councils.

A new Instrumental Music Group will now at how music tuition is delivered.

Supporting ambitions

He is reported to have said: "The group's work will also examine how we ensure local musical traditions are catered for as well as studying what role the wider musical community can play in supporting our ambitions for our children."

The group, which will include representatives of parents and teachers, will start work in January and report back next summer.

Positive SBBA impact

The announcement comes close on the heels of the positive political impact created by the Scottish Youth Championships in Perth in November, where Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop was left deeply impressed by the scores of youngsters thoroughly enjoying their music making initiated by the long term development plans of the Scottish Brass Band Association.
