Product Review: Champion Disinfectant Mouthpiece Spray

Champion Instrument & Mouthpiece & Synthetic Reed Disinfectant
Price: £5.50 approx per 60ml bottle

British woodwind and brass brand Champion have built a respected reputation for its extensive line-up of products - from lubricants and valve oils to instrument cases, mutes, mouthpieces and cleaning accessories.

Competitively priced they have filled a niche in the market place with an effective distribution network through its parent company, the UK based, Barnes & Mullins.

The latest addition to their growing portfolio has come in response to the concerns surrounding Covid-19, and the need to ensure health and safety needs become an integral part of any brass or woodwind players daily requirements.

Simple and effective

Champion Disinfectant is aimed at offering a simple and effective solution for safe instrument and accessory disinfection both before and after playing.

Available in a 60ml spray bottle, its antiviral and antibacterial formula solution is non-hazardous and non-fragranced.  It can be used on all finishes of brass instruments and mouthpieces - although it is not recommended for stainless steel.

In a new era of playing health and safety ‘peace of mind’ protection it does its job – and should find its way into the instrument cases of every player.

We asked a couple of players to test it out for us and they found it both easy to use and left no after-taste (you spray it on and leave for at least 30 seconds).

You can also spray certain areas “a few times” according to the instructions, to enable “a deep clean” before wiping with a clean microfibre cloth – although our testers didn’t quite see the real need for that unless the mouthpiece has been left alone for a considerable period of time away from your case or picked up by other players.

Peace of mind

As a handy, fit in the case anti-bacterial, anti-viral product, it gives an effective level of protection for your mouthpiece use and at around £5.50 (rivals b# also produce a sanitiser spray for around £6.95 and an instrument soak for around £15.00) it doesn’t break the bank and lasts quite a while.

In a new era of playing health and safety ‘peace of mind’ protection it does its job – and should find its way into the instrument cases of every player.
