Yorkshire Regional Championships

Fourth Section:

We cast our eye over the competitors in the Fourth Section as they try and gain one of the two qualification places on offer for Torquay.

Fourth Section:
Sunday 3rd March
Adjudicator: Barry Thompson
Commences: 9.15am

Competing Bands: Barnsley Metropolitan (J. Grinnell): Dinnington Colliery (T. Bannan): Emley Brass (J. Bowden): Gawthorpe Brass (G. Hallas): Linthwaite (S. Platten): Lofthouse 2000 (A. Whitaker): Ripponden Carriers (B. Greenwood): Thurcroft Welfare (P. Dickens).

A very small line up in Yorkshire in the Fourth Section could be the signal for a very worrying trend, where the experienced Barry Thompson will have to sort out between eight bands on Gordon Jacob's "Suite in B Flat for Brass Band". We say worrying because in 1997 there was a field of 13 so things are getting smaller by the year. Still, the contest should be a close one.

Barnsley Metropolitan came 3rd here last year and 5th in 2000 so they seem to be moving in the right direction and 2002 could well see them take one of the two qualifying spots for Torquay that are on offer, whilst Dinnington will be conducted again by Toby Bannan ex of Fodens who took the band to 4th place here last year after they could only manage 8th the year before. A repeat or better may be in the pot with a bit of luck.

Emley Brass came 6th last year and with that type of solid performance behind them will be hoping to push for the prizes this time around, whilst Gawthorpe Brass come to the contest off the back of coming 6th at the recent Yorkshire and Humberside contest and will be keen to at least gain 4th place here as they did in 2000 and not the 8th place of last year.

Linthwaite are a band that has improved in the lat two years from coming 9th in 2000 to coming 5th last year, so again they should be confident that the experience gained could see them come in the prizes. Meanwhile Ripponden Carriers will be hoping to improve on 7th place last year and their 16th place at Pontins and Thurcroft Welfare after not performing last year make a return after being relegated from the Third Section in 2000. They recently came 3rd at the Yorkshire and Humberside contest so hopes are high. We haven't got much info on Lofthouse 2000 except we believe they are being taken by Tony Whitaker, - we wish them well on what we believe is their first Regional outing.

Plenty of good little bands then and the standard should be up on last year, where it must be said the overall playing was pretty poor. Still, much to look forward to as the Fourth Section kicks off the weekend. We are going for Barnsleyand and Thurcroft as our two qualifiers, but it could realy be any from this field to get the nod.

2002 Result:

1. Clifton and Lightcliffe
2. Maltby Miners Welfare
3. Barnsley Metropolitan
4. Dinnington Colliery
5. Linthwaite
6. Emley

4BR Prediction:

1. Barnsley Metropolitan
2. Thurcroft Welfare
3. Dinnington Colliery
4. Gawthorpe Brass
5. Linthwaite
6. Lofthouse 2000

Dark Horse: Emley Brass
