Competing Bands:

Bedworth Brass – TBA
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 3rd in 2nd Section: 2000 – 4th in 2nd Section: 2001 – 20th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 16th
Sep 2001: Wychavon Festival of Brass – 10th
Oct 2001: Pontins – 20th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 6th
Jul 2002: Belvior Castle Entertainment Contest – 3rd
Sep 2002 : Wychavon Entertainment Contest – 6th

A hard working band, Bedworth come to the contest after coming 6th at the Regional Championships in the Midlands which they followed up with 3rd place at the Belvoir Contest and 6th at Wychavon. Not a bad record here at Prestatyn although they came low down the filed when they went up in class last year. Will be looking to improve.

Blackburn and Darwen – E. Landon
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 13th: 2000 – 6th: 2001 – 5th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 5th
Apr 2001: Buxton Contest – 2nd
Oct 2001: Pontins – 5th
Nov 2001: Wilkinson (St.Helens) – 3rd
Mar 2002: Regionals – 12th

Solid performers over the years at all levels – including the Championship Section. Came 3rd at the Wilkinson contest but came last at the Regionals in Blackpool. Have improved year on year at Prestatyn for the last three outings, so they will be looking for more of the same.

Boldon Colliery - C. Bentham
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 18th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 7th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 5th

Chris Bentham continues to make steady progress with the band from the North East, although we have found contesting records hard to come by over the last two years. 18th here last time out, so they will be hoping to improve on that at least. Don’t know more than that though, so watch out, anything could happen.

City of Bristol – B. James
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 11th in 2nd Section: 2000 – 3rd in 2nd Section: 2001 – 2nd in 2nd Section:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 2nd (S2)
May 2001: Weston Super Mare – 1st (S2)
Oct 2001: Pontins – 2nd (S2)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 7th
May 2002: Weston Super Mare – 3rd

The West Country band have enjoyed some fine successes over the past three or four years and have their conductor, Bryn James to thank as he has been very much the catalyst. The Regionals in Bristol were a disappointment though and they could only manage 7th place. A return to form in Weston with a 3rd and they have a fine record here over the past few years as well – although that was in the 2nd Section. Could do well.

Dobcross Silver – D. Hadfield
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 – 3rd: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 3rd
Mar 2002: Regionals – 6th

Dobcross are a famous name, although they have been quiet of late on the contest scene. The last record we could find was their 6th place at Blackpool where the exciting talent of Dennis Hadfield led them. He’s at the helm again, so don’t be surprised that they will be well prepared and ready to take a few scalps.

Flookburgh – J. Iveson
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 7th: 2000 – 14th: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – Non competing
Nov 2001: Wilkinson (St.Helens) – 1st (S2)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 10th

The North East band came 10th at the Regionals this year in the 1st Section under the baton of John Iveson and will therefore be hoping to improve further. Didn’t compete here last year, but did get a 7th in 1999. May find things a bit difficult, but then you never know.

Holme Silver – I. Scott
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 8th
Nov 2001: Wilkinson (St.Helens) – 7th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 6th
May 2002: Holme Valley Contest – 2nd
Jun 2002: Easingwold March contest – 3rd (Best Overall Prize)
Jul 2002: Brighouse March and Hymn Tune Contest – 4th
Jul 2002: Old Silkstone March Contest – 1st

A busy band – Holme have done well in 2002, although they could only manage 6th at the Regionals. Since then though its been a series of decent results, culminating in top spot at the Silkstone March Contest. Haven’t competed here for a good while so they may be set for a quick march into the prize list given their recent form.

Ibstock Brick – P. Northey
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 12th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 10th
Dec 2001: Leamington Spa (WMBBA) – 1st
Mar 2002: Regionals – 11th

11th at the Regionals was a poor result for the band from the Midlands, especially as they won the Leamington Spa contest late last year. Nothing in the contesting field since that we could find but they did come 12th here last time out. A bit of a mystery, so one worth looking out for.

Jackfield (Elcock Reison) – C. Lewis
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 9th: 2000 – 5th: 2001 – 6th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 3rd
Mar 2002: Regionals – 5th
May 2002: Buxton Contest – 10th

Good solid outfit from the Midlands, Jackfield came 10th at the Buxton contest in May and with a good record here they will be hoping to improve on last years 6th place. Maybe this time out?

Lydmet Lyney – W. Rushton
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 17th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 4th
Sep 2001: Wychavon Festival of Brass – 7th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 4th
Sep 2002: Wychavon Entertainment Contest – 9th

Lydmet just missed out at the Regional Championships in Bristol where they came 4th. However, they dropped off a bit to come 9th at Wychavon so they will be looking for a good result here. 17th last year isn’t a good omen, but hopes are high we expect.

Markham and District – N. Seaman
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 7th in 2nd Section:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 5th
May 2001: Weston Super Mare – 3rd (S2)
Sep 2001: Wychavon Festival of Brass – 7th (S2)
Oct 2001: Pontins – 7th
Oct 2001: Centenary WWBBA (N. Seaman) – 2nd (S2)
Apr 2002: South East Wales contest at Ebbw Vale – 1st (S2)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 10th
September 2002: Ammanford – 1st

The Welsh band recently won at Ammanford under Andrew Jones and they have been on good form throughout the year, although the Regionals at Swansea was a real disappointment. 7th in the Second Section last year and a step up a section this time out. Solid and steady, they could just spring a surprise.

Matthews Norfolk Brass – D. Stowell
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC : 2000 - DNC : 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 10th (ChS)
May 2002: East Anglian BBA- 1st
Mar 2002: Regionals – 1st

Don’t really know what to expect from the London and Southern Counties winners. They didn’t go to the Finals in Torquay, so we don’t know if they are on good, bad or indifferent form! By the looks of their recent record though, they could well feature, although this will be their first outing here for some time.

Pemberton Old Wigan – TBA
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 5th in 2nd Section: 2000 - DNC: 2001 –9th:
4BR Ranking – October 2002 : 55 - October 2001 : N/A

Mar 2001: Regionals – 8th
Sep 2001: Wychavon Festival of Brass – 1st
Oct 2001: Pontins – 9th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 1st
May 2002: Senior Trophy – 1st
Sep 2002: Wychavon Entertainment Contest – 5th
Sept 2002: National Finals – 9th

Should come to Pontins as one of the favourites for the title as they have had a pretty good year so far. Winners of the Regional title in the North West and then the Senior Trophy, Pemberton are a classy outfit. Their performance at Torquay could only get them 9th place, although they were very unlucky, so they will be determined to put that behind them. Ones to watch.

Poole Borough – P. Randall
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 13th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 5th
Mar 2002: Regionals – 6th

Not much of a contesting record to go on this year for us, with only the 6th place at Bristol as a form guide. Came 13th here last year, so they will be keen to improve on that.

St. Austell Town – TBA
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 8th
Mar 2002: Cornwall Brass Band Contest – 2nd
Mar 2002: Regionals – 1st
Sept 2002: National Finals - 12th

The winners of the West of England Regional, St. Austell are a band that has experienced all the ups and downs of banding life over the years. This year has been pretty good though and they did give a solid showing at the National Finals ion Torquay. Could well feature.

Stalybridge Old – TBA
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 6th in Championship: 2000 – 6th in Championship: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 8th (ChS)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 8th

Just a couple of years ago, Stalybridge were competing strongly here in the Championship Section, so they will surely be determined to try and get back to that level sooner rather than later. 8th at the Regionals on their last outing may be an indicator to how they will do here.

Swindon Pegasus – J. Winterflood
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – 4th: 2000 - DNC: 2001 - DNC:

Mar 2001: Regionals – Non competing
Dec 2001: Wessex Winter – 1st
Mar 2002: Regionals – 5th

Something of a mystery band for us. When they compete they seem to do very well – winners at Wessex and 5th at the Regionals, and they did come 4th here in 1999. What the current form is like though we don’t really know.

Tintwistle – D. Shutter
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 – 1st in 2nd Section: 2001 – 4th in 2nd Section:

Jan 2001: Rochdale – 1st (S2)
Mar 2001: Regionals – 2nd (S2)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 10th
May 2002: Buxton Contest – 6th

2001 saw the band do very well in the Second Section, but the step up has found the band from the Midlands struggle a bit more in 2002. They have done well to hold their own though at the higher level and solid performances at the Regionals and Buxton should hold them in good stead here. Won the Second Section in 2000 and 4th last year. They seem to like it here, so watch out.

Towcester Studio – Mrs. A. Sellers
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 – 2nd in 2nd Section: 2001 – 3rd in 2nd Section:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 1st (S2)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 4th
May 2002: Buxton Contest – 2nd

One of the real star bands of 2001, Towcester have continued their upward curve of progress and came 4th at the Midlands Regional Championship. Up a level this year, don’t be surprised if they do well again.

United Norwest Co-op Milnrow – C. Whiteoak
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 – 7th in 2nd Section: 2001 – 5th in 2nd Section:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 6th (S1)
Apr 2001: Tameside – 3rd (Ch/1S)
Nov 2001: Manchester District Contest 2001 – 3rd
Mar 2002: Regionals – 11th
Sep 2002: Buxton Entertainment Contest – 7th
Oct 2002: North West Open Championships – 4th

A busy band and a solid performer wherever they go. Not quite doing enough this year to get into the prizes, but they have out in solid shows at the Regionals, Buxton and the North West Open. They move up a section here after two good years in the second section, so they will be hoping for a bit of good luck.

Vernon Building Society Poynton – M. Obermuller
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 - DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 10th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 10th
Sep 2001: Wychavon Festival of Brass – 4th
Nov 2001: Wilkinson (St.Helens) – 9th
Nov 2001: Manchester District Contest 2001 – 1st
Mar 2002: Regionals – 4th
May 2002: Buxton Contest – 5th
Sep 2002: Wychavon Entertainment Contest – 4th

10th here last year, when they were a busy band on the contesting stage, Poynton will be hoping for a better return this time out. 4th at the Regionals, 5th at Buxton and 4th at Wychavon, they have come there or thereabouts each time they have played this year. Could well feature.

Welwyn Garden City – D. Stokes
Main Contesting Achievements and Records 2001 -2002
Pontins Record - Last 3 years: 1999 – DNC: 2000 - DNC: 2001 – 7th:

Mar 2001: Regionals – 4th
Oct 2001: SCABBA Folkestone – 5th (ChS)
Mar 2002: Regionals – 2nd
Sept 2002: National Finals – 14th

A good year so far for Welwyn with a runners up spot at the London Area and a solid performance at Torquay to come 14th. 7th here last year, so they know the form Another band who could fancy their chances.

4BR Prediction:

Difficult this. So many of these bands are much the same standard, and none really stand out as the form horse in the field. We’ll go for Pemberton then as they have performed well all year and were unlucky to come as low as they did in Torquay. Others to look out for should be Blackburn and Darwen, Towcester Studio, Matthews Norfolk Brass, Jackfield (Elcock Reison) and Markham and District. Our dark horses are City of Bristol.

We don’t know how accurate these predictions will be though (so nothing has changed there has it) ...

Prediction:

1. Pemberton Old
2. Blackburn and Darwen
3. Towcester Studio
4. Matthews Norfolk Brass
5. Jackfield (Elcock Reisen)
6. Markham and District

Dark Horse: City of Bristol

Last Years Result:

1. Peter Hawke Garages Lindley
2. Pennine Brass
3. Haydock Ogden Travel
4. ASDA Stocksbridge
5. Blackburn and Darwen
6. Jackfield (Elcock Reisen)
