2003 Scottish Regional Qualifying Championships

Fourth Section
Saturday 8th March
Starts 1.00pm

Adjudicators:
Chris Wormald and Philip McCann:

Test Piece: Lydian Pictures - Simon Dobson

Two men in the box who you know will know the score of “Lydian Pictures” backwards in Messr’s McCann and Wormald and so the band will have the added task of doing of impressing two not one man in the box.

Scottish bands haven’t traveled too well over the years to the National Finals in the 4th Section and you have to go back to 1973 we think when Dundee won when a Scottish band was last triumphant! They need to improve on that record pretty quick. The best the bands have done in the past five years is just two top 6 places, so those making the short trip to Dundee this year may have a lot to do.

Bon Accord Silver B
Conductor:
B. Wallace

Last Year: 3rd
Last Seven Years:
2002: 3rd
2001: 4th
2000: 3rd
1999: 6th
1998: DNC
1997: 11th 3rd Section (rel)
1996: Winners 4th Section (prom)

Bon Accord B have been pretty consistent over the past few years here and actually won the title in 1996. They had just the one year in the higher section and didn’t compete in 1998. Since then it has been pretty good stuff so they will be looking for a t least a podium place this time around.

Broxburn Silver
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: DNC
Last Seven Years:
2002: DNC
2001: 10th 3rd Section (rel)
2000: 10th 3rd Section
1999: 4th 3rd Section
1998: 9th 3rd Section
1997: 7th 3rd Section
1996: 6th 3rd Section

A band with a good long record, but who didn’t take part last year. We don’t know the reason why, but perhaps it has given the band the chance to re group after a couple of poor years in the higher section. Before that though and they were doing well, so lets hope they are back on the road to recovery.

Coalburn Silver
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: 8th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 8th
2001: DNC
2000: 8th
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC

We don’t know much about Coalburn other than they have had an on/off appearance record here in the last three years. On each occasion they have come 8th, so if they are here they may well repeat that again.

Creetown Silver
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: 5th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 5th
2001: 9th
2000: 10th
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: 6th

No MD details for us at the moment so we don’t know who will be directing affairs for the band this year. Last year they came 5th and that was the third year in a row that they had improved. They will be looking for much the same again then, and if so they could be challenging for a qualification spot.

Dumfries Town
Conductor:
G. Brotherston

Last Year: 7th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 7th
2001: 6th
2000:DNC
1999: 4th
1998: 7th
1997: 6th
1996: DNC

Another band with a good long record here, with just the two occasions since 1996thatthey haven’t made it to the stage. When they do though they put up a strong challenge and they came 6th in 2001 and 7th last year. More of the same or a bit better this time around?

Forfar Instrumental
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: DNC
Last Seven Years:
2002: DNC
2001: DNC
2000: DNC
1999: 9th
1998: 4th
1997: DNC
1996: DNC

We don’t know much about Forfar as we believe this is the first time since 1999 that they will take the stage here. They have come as high as 4th, but 9th in 1999 was their last effort. We will have to wait and see, but it is nice to see them back.

Langholm Town
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: DNC
Last Seven Years:
2002: DNC
2001: DNC
2000: DNC
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC

The mystery band for us. We have no information at all, so if anyone knows anything please let us know.

Newlands Concert
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: 10th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 10th
2001: 8th
2000: 12th 3rd Section (rel)
1999: 7th 3rd Section
1998: 11th 2nd Section (rel)
1997: 10th 2nd Section
1996: 9th 2nd Section

Newlands seem to have gone through a bit of a rough patch of late if the results here are anything to go by and they were competing as high as the 2nd Section in 1998. Since then they have declined somewhat, but in the last two years have held their own in the bottom section. Now is the time for the start of the climb back.

Peebles
Conductor:
D. Broadbent

Last Year: 5th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 5th
2001: 10th
2000: DNC
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC

Peebles made their debut as far as we could tell here last year and did very well to come 5th. They certainly want to do well and have taken the ambitious decision to engage Derek Broadbent by the looks of it to spearhead their challenge. It could prove a wise investment.

Penicuik Silver
Conductor:
J. Chamberlain

Last Year: 4th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 4th
2001: 3rd
2000: 4th
1999: 5th
1998: 6th
1997: 5th
1996: 5th

So near yet so far for Penicuik as the results here show over the years. They haven’t been out of the top six since at least 1996 and just missed out on a qualification spot in 2001 when they came 3rd. Luck is bound to change at some time and we think they just could go a couple of places better and start to book some B&B in Dundee.

Stranraer Youth
Conductor:
I. Munro

Last Year: 11th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 11th
2001: DNC
2000: 13th
1999: 10th
1998: DNC
1997: 10th 3rd Section (rel)
1996: 9th 3rd Section

Stranraer Youth have been coming here for quite a while now and although they have had two no shows in the past couple of years, when they do take the stage they do well enough. They were competing in the 3rd Section in 1997 but after a year away they came back here. 11th last year should be the spur to see them mount a more serious challenge this time around.

Queensferry High
Conductor:
TBA

Last Year: DNC
Last Seven Years:
2002: DNC
2001: DNC
2000: DNC
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC

A complete and utter mystery for us. No details so very little we can comment on. Sorry.

4BR Prediction:

Two bands stick out for us in this Section and although we haven’t any inside information our spies north of the border tell us that Bon Accord and Penicuik will be the ones to beat. Dumfries should also do well again and we think Peebles may well feature. After that it’s anyones guess and so we’ll go for Creetown and Coalburn with our dark horses being one of the mystery bands and Forfar Instrumental. Hows that!

1. Bon Accord B
2. Penicuik
3. Dumfries
4. Peebles
5. Creetown
6. Coalburn

Dark Horse: Forfar Instrumental
