2004 Yorkshire Regional Championships
Third Section
Sunday 7th March
Test Piece: Vizcaya –
Gilbert Vinter
Adjudicator: Ian Craddock
The Third Section has over the past 10 years been a breeding ground
for bands that have had high ambitions and plenty of talent to
go all the way. Past winners here have included four bands that
have gone onto the Championship Section – Skelmanthorpe,
Rothwell, Todmorden and Marsden, so could the 2003 winner be plotting
the same path we wonder.
Not to brilliant a record for the qualifiers though when it comes
to the finals of late, with Skelmanthorpe the last National winners
way back in 1993, and before that Drighlington in 1987. Old Silkstone
got 3rd in 1999 and Horbury Victoria came runners up in 2001, but
other than that bands for Yorkshire have failed to make a mark come
the finals. Dundee saw both of Yorkshire’s best come out of
the prizes, so does that mean that the bands here are not up to
it?
No. But Yorkshire folk do like to brag about their exploits, so
a cracking contest is needed to restore some dented pride.
Ian Craddock has a difficult task we think separating the bands
this time, but the test piece should be able to squeeze the wheat
from the chaff easily enough for him to get things spot on.
Gilbert Vinter’s test piece is an old warhorse for sure,
but it’s still a good test and contains all those magic ingredients
the composer was noted for. The winners will have to capture the
essence of the music, as well as just playing the notes.
Barnsley Metropolitan
Conductor: John Grinnell
Last Eight Years:
2003: 10th (John Grinnell)
2002: 6th 4th section (prom)
2001: 3rd 4th section
2000: 5th 4th section
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC
Barnsley struggled a bit here last year after coming up from the
Fourth Section. 10th place means they will need a good result to
stave off the threat of possible relegation. They should be well
prepared, so hopefully they can take a few more scalps.
Clifton & Lightcliffe
Conductor: Rob Collinson
Last Eight Years:
2003: 4th (Rob Collinson)
2002: 6th
2001: Winners 4th Section (prom)
2000: 7th 4th Section
1999: 8th (rel)
1998: 14th
1997: 8th
1996: 7th
4th place last year was another improvement on the upward rise
of Clifton and Lightcliffe. Rob Collinson has done minor miracles
with the band since they won the Fourth Section title here in 2001.
If they continue in the same vein then a qualification spot may
be their reward.
Dinnington Colliery
Conductor: Toby Bannan
Last Eight Years:
2003: Winners of Fourth Section (prom) (Toby Bannan)
2002: 4th
2001: 4th
2000: 8th
1999: 4th
Last year’s Fourth Section Champions went on to come 11th
at the Lower Section National Finals, whilst they also came runners
up at the Mineworkers Championships. Toby Bannan is an impressive
young conducting talent and they have a solid core of experienced
players. Another step up the ladder should be their reward this
year we think.
Emley Brass
Conductor: Garry Hallas
Last Eight Years:
2003: 11th (Marc Robbins)
2002: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
2001: 6th 4th Section
2000: DNC
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: 9th 4th Section
1996: 8th 4th Section
Emley found the going tough here last year when they propped up
the prize table by coming 11th. Garry Hallas has been brought in
to steady the ship and the man who guided Grange Moor to the National
Finals from the Fourth Section last year will be hoping for a return
trip to Harrogate this year as well.
Gawthorpe Brass '85'
Conductor: John Edward
Last Year: 5th
Last Eight Years:
2003: 5th (John Edward)
2002: 9th
2001: 10th 2nd Section (rel)
2000: 12th 2nd Section
1999: 5th (prom)
1998: 6th
1997: Winners 4th Section (prom)
1996: Winners 4th Section
A band moving in the right direction at this contest it seems. Gawthorpe
have improved in each of the last two years and John Edward guided
them with a solid performance into 5th place last year. They will
be hoping for a further nudge up the prize list this time around.
Huddersfield Brass
Conductor: Alan Holdsworth
Last Eight Years:
2003: 10th in Second Section (rel) (Ian Tiffany)
2002: 11th
2001: 11th
2000: 3rd
1999: 9th
1998: 5th
1997: 2nd 3rd Section (prom)
1996: 5th 4th Section (prom)
Huddersfield will be hoping that their recent poor run of results
at the Area contest will come to an end this year. Since coming
3rd in 2000 they have fallen away, and were relegated after coming
10th last year. Alan Holdsworth has been brought in to stop the
slide, so we will have to wait and see.
Maltby Miners Welfare
Conductor: Terry Clifford
Last Eight Years:
2003: 7th (Terry Clifford)
2002: 11th
2001: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
2000: 6th 4th Section
1999: Winners 4th Section
1998: 8th 4th Section
1997: 8th 4th Section
1996: 9th 4th Section
Since 2000 Maltby have been moving in the right direction under
the guidance of Terry Clifford. In the last two years in particular
they have made big leaps forward, so they will be hoping that continues
this year. They recently came 8th at the Mineworkers contest, so
what will Bradford bring them?
Slaithwaite
Conductor: Barry Hudson
Last Eight Years:
2003: 8th (Kevin Lever)
2002: 7th
2001: 4th
2000: 9th
1999: 9th
1998: 12th
1997: 3rd
1996: 3rd 4th Section (prom)
Another famous old name in the banding world, Slaithwaite has been
holding their own here over the past seven years without ever really
pushing for a qualification spot. Barry Hudson takes over the helm
from Kevin Lever for this years outing, so can they beat their best
of
4th place in 2001?
Stanley Newmarket Colliery
Conductor: Keith Wardle
Last Eight Years:
2003: 2nd (Glynn Thompson)
2002: 12th 2nd Section (rel)
2001: 9th 2nd Section
2000: 4th (prom)
1999: 4th
1998: Winners 4th Section (prom)
1997: 4th 4th Section
1996: 6th 4th Section
Last year’s runners up here went on the come 7th at the National
Finals in Dundee, so they will be looking for a return trip for
sure. Keith Wardle replaces Glynn Thompson at the helm, so will
the change in the baton bring further success?

4BR Prediction:
Another difficult one this, but we think we will go and stick our
necks out and plumb for Stanley Newmarket Colliery to go one place
better than last year and take the top prize. Behind them we think
Maltby Miners are in with a good shout followed by Clifton and Lightcliffe,
Gawthorpe, Emley and Dinnington. Our dark horse is Slaithwaite.
