The 37th Annual Ern Keller International Soloist of the Year and Band of the Year takes place today at the St Marys Band Club, Penrith, Sydney.

Performances:
1. Karina Filipi (tuba), South Australia, "Three Miniatures for Tuba & Piano" (Plog)
Spirited and rhythmical opening. Clear, secure and well chosen. A great benchmark
for the day.

2. Davey Boyes (euphonium), Federation of Australasian Brass Bands (New Zealand), "Zigeunerweisen" (Sarasate)
Took risks with success. Admirable interpretation. Another strong performance.

3. Harmen Vanhoorne (cornet), Great Britain (Belgium), "Fortunes Fool" (Nieuwenhuis)
No music.
Different class. So atmospheric — beautiful sound. Technically so exciting. Quite incredible — a real treat for us all here downunder. Wow.

4. Bill Barker (euphonium), Australian (QLD), "Harlequin" (Sparke)
Secure and confident. Technically very convincing. A performance of high calibre.

5. Phillip O'Neill (cornet), New South Wales, "Grand Russian Fantasia" (Hunsberger)
No music. Stylish presentation — musically and visually. Solid delivery of one of the
cornet classics.

6. Jamie Lawson (cornet), Victoria, "Slavische Fantasie" (Hohn)
Great dark sound and stylish opening. Captured the style of the piece perfectly.

7. Riki McDonnell (euphonium), New Zealand, "Harlequin" (Sparke)
Accompanist: Penny Brown
Nice jacket.
Beautifully phrased and controlled opening. A strong, lyrical & convincing performance.

8. Luke Aaron (trombone), Queensland, "Deux Danses" (Defaye)
A strong, powerful performance of a very difficult solo.

9. Shiho Takeda (cornet), Japan, "Slavische Fantasie" (Hohn)
Sweet sound. Another very stylish rendition. Has done her country proud.

10. Joe Cook (tuba), Tasmania, "Three Miniatures for Tuba & Piano" (Plog)
Magnificent technique and clarity. Great to see a legend playing so well.

CLEETHORPES BAND CIO

April 3 • We have vacancies for a trombone player and a bass player. Cleethorpes Band rehearse near the seafront on Thursday and Sunday evenings. Placed 3rd in the NOE 4th section. Other players are always welcome as we may be able to switch positions around

April 2 • . Tintwistle Band are looking for a 2nd horn player to help complete the team.. We rehearse Monday and Thursday 8-10pm at our own bandroom on Old Road in Tintwistle, and perform a variety of concerts all year round.
