There was plenty of great entertainment of offer at the revamped Pogson-Bray Contest with James Shepherd leading Elland Silver to victory.

A great day of brass band entertainment was enjoyed at the recently revamped Pogson-Bray Contest, which was held at Berties Banqueting Rooms in Elland.

Nine bands

Over 150 people came and listened throughout the day to the nine bands that performed 20-minute entertainment programmes judged by Stuart Fawcett.

In the end it was hometown favourite Elland Silver led by MD James Shepherd who was left celebrating after producing a highly inventive programme that included a new composition aptly titled 'Opening Number', written by Nick Mills, a student at Huddersfield University.

Elland success

Elland not only won the prize as ‘Best Third Section Band’, but also took the overall title beating several higher section bands in the process.

The organisers told 4BR: "As organisers we are delighted with the response to the contest and Berties proved to be an excellent venue. They have kindly offered the venue for next year and a date will be announced shortly."

Results:

1. Elland Silver
2. Lindley
3. Slaithwaite

Best Third Section: Elland Silver
Best Fourth Section: Clifton & Lightcliffe B
Best Youth/Unregistered: Sellers Youth
Best March: Lindley
