Kirkintilloch Kelvin took the entertainment honours and Champions Trophy at the Northern Counties contest in Kinross on the weekend, as Charles Keenan led the top section contenders to victory.

Pushed

First Section Bon Accord pushed them all the way, as the Aberdeen based band showed their growing contest maturity under the direction of Stephen Malcolm. The final podium place went to Second Section contenders Tullis Russell Mills conducted by Paul Drury.

Adjudicator Bryan Allen plumbed for Kirkintilloch Kelvin's varied programme which featured a thrilling performance from ‘Best Soprano’ award winner Gordon Kyle on the high octane arrangement of 'Live and Let Die'.

Awards

The band also claimed the ‘Most Entertaining’ and ‘Best Non-NCBBA Band’ awards, with the MD picking up the ‘Winning Conductor’ trophy.

There was also an equally fine performance from Bon-Accord’s principal trombonist Mark Boyd on 'Bolivar', which saw him take the ‘Best Soloist’ prize, whilst they also claimed awards for ‘Best Percussion’, ‘Best First Section’ and ‘Best NCBBA Member Band’.

All singing

Meanwhile, Tullis Russell Mills Band certainly showed their all round entertainment abilities as the Fife band closed their programme with a rousing vocal rendition of ‘They Come from the East’ to claim the ‘Best Second Section Band’ honours.

Cheltenham bound Kingdom 'B' took the ‘Best Third Section Band’ award in coming fourth overall, with fellow National finalists Tullis Russell Intermediate Band claiming the ‘Best Fourth Section’ title.

There was good news for Scottish banding as it was revealed that the Northern Counties Open Contest will hopefully be making a permanent return to the contesting schedule in 2014.
