Seismic change at GUS

Solo baritone Jo Stephenson opts to find out more about what makes the earth shake in Australia.

GUS in action

Virtuosi GUS baritone player Jo Stephenson, is due to set off to pastures new next year.

Seismology

Having achieved a first-class honours degree in Geophysics, Jo (above) is heading to Australia to add a PhD in Seismology to her name, by studying earthquakes and the effects on the Earth’s structure.

To help on her way, the Butlins champion recently presented Jo with a special pair of ‘GUS-ette’ underwear — embroidered with the Virtuosi GUS name, to ensure that even in the tightest spot she will be able to rely on the band to give her support!

Fantastic

A pun laden Virtuosi GUS spokesperson told 4BR: "Of course we think it’s ‘pants’ that Jo is leaving to go to Australia. She is an outstanding player and has been a fantastic member of the band.

We wish her all the best for her PhD and hope that she will be able to carry on banding whilst she is away."

They added: "Is there anyone in brass banding who will be more qualified to play Journey to the Centre of the Earth we wonder?!"

Hicks replacement

Her replacement is at present under wraps until after Christmas, although the band did reveal that the highly respected former Flowers solo euphonium player Andy Hicks, who has recently relocated to the area, will be depping for them on baritone as they defend their Mineworkers title in Skegness in January.
