4BR has been informed of the death of Dave Smith, a stalwart member and solo trombone player of the Chapletown Band in Yorkshire.

It is understood that Dave died unexpectedly just before Christmas, with the band informed of his death during a local concert performance.

Committed bandsman

A spokesperson told 4BR: "Dave was such a committed bandsman that he was never late to a job let alone absent. However, in the first interval the band was informed that he had passed away suddenly at home just prior to coming to the concert."

Courage

They added: "The band did Dave proud and showed great courage carrying on in such difficult circumstances. The programme was changed to include, ‘Eventide’ in his memory. It was understandably very emotional for everyone concerned as most had known him throughout his long tenure with the band.

Dave will be greatly missed by the band and throughout the movement, as he was much respected for his professionalism, advice, help and friendship, which was always readily available.

The band wishes to express their deepest sympathy to all Dave’s family, especially his mother and father."
