The young players of the Wardle Academy and Youth bands had a great time of it in Skegness.

The Wardle Academy Junior and Youth bands had a highly successful and enjoyable time of it at the recent Butlins Mineworkers Championship in Skegness.

First prize

The Junior Band, conducted by Gwen Smith, played in the Ensemble Section, and their entertainment set including ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ saw them claim first prize.

In addition, principal cornet Rachael Clegg won the Brian Jones Memorial Prize as ‘Best Soloist’.

Bowled over

Adjudicator Alan Fernie was certainly bowled over the standard of playing from all the bands on show and made some lovely comments about the Junior Band in particular.

In his remarks he said: "Excellent work from all kids and teachers…This is lovely stuff, good use of colour and instrumental blend."

Fine renditions

Meanwhile, the Wardle High School Youth Band, conducted by Lee Rigg, performed in the Youth Section, running eventual winners, Youth Brass 2000 very close with a programme that included fine renditions of ‘Old 100th’, ‘Fill the World with Music’ and ‘MacArthur Park’.

Laura Conway’s solo in ‘Macushla’ also prompted positive praise from Alan Fernie who said it was, ‘Beautifully, lyrically played’, whilst he also praised the band itself in his remarks, writing: "What a great band! Such good sounds and an exciting and involving programme. Well done all."

As part of the festival, students got to spend the weekend at the resort, and had the opportunity to listen to other bands performing in different sections of the festivalRachel Perry

Strong tradition

Wardle spokesperson Rachel Perry added: "Wardle has a strong tradition in the performing arts, but particularly in brass band music. We provide instrumental teaching for every pupil who wants it and the school has several groups and bands and also support local primary schools.

As part of the festival, students got to spend the weekend at the resort, and had the opportunity to listen to other bands performing in different sections of the festival."
