Durham University's new composition wins Unibrass approval.

A new innovation for Unibrass last weekend proved to be successful for musical partnership of Dave Collins and Lewis Wilkinson of Durham University.

Lambton Worm

Competitors were allowed to include a new composition in their programmes with the overall award going to the pair's inventive take on a North East folk story of 'The Lambton Worm'.

Thrilled

Dave wrote the music whilst the spoken text was written and performed by Lewis.

Dave, who is composer-in-residence at Fishburn Band was naturally thrilled that the piece had found favour with the adjudicators, Michael Fowles and Tom Davoren, along with listeners in the hall and around the world, courtesy of the online streaming of the event.

Speaking toh 4BR, Dave gave an insight into the piece.

"The work is a piece of programme music based upon the tale of the Lambton Worm, a North East folk story which is depicted by a narration and accompanied by the band."

The Lambton Worm tells the tale of a North East folk story through words and music4BR

Musical phrases

He added: "In addition, the ensemble presents a number of key leitmotifs and it is the combination and manipulation of these musical ideas that lead us through the narrative.

Throughout the work there is a number of interesting technical effects which creates something exciting to watch and to listen to."

Youtube

The performance will be available to view on the Unibrass Youtube channel.
