Fun Day creates new interest for Great Yarmouth

An innovative day of fun has meant Great Yarmouth has tapped into a new source of great playing potential.

Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth Brass recently held a ‘Brass Adventure Fun Day’ to encourage would-be brass players to come and try instruments and have some fun at the same time.

Basics

26 children and 2 adults came for all or part of the day and were taught the basics of brass playing on cornet, trumpet, tenor horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone and tuba!

There were also energetic brass band and music based games, colouring activities and word searches for the youngest potential players, before the day ended with a fabulous short concert to demonstrate the great progress made.

Unison

Penny Gilbert of Great Yarmouth Brass told 4BR: "We really showed that we could play in unison (well almost!), and how enough notes had been mastered to play ‘Merrily We Roll Along’!

There was also an amazing solo performance of ‘Yankee Doodle’ on tenor horn by a 6 year old."

Joining up

Penny was also encouraged by how many of the young players now wish to carry on their playing with the Great Yarmouth Youth Band.

She added: "That was the overall aim of the day — and I think we have succeeded!"
