New horn concerto set for Cornish Youth premiere

A new tenor horn concerto written by Christopher Bond for Lowenna Taylor will form the musical centrepiece of this year's Cornwall Youth Band course.

There will be plenty of home grown musical talent enjoying their Christmas holidays this year, when around 70 young musicians of the Cornwall Youth Band will spend four days rehearsing under the baton of guest conductor Les Neish at their residential course at the Truro High for Girls.

Main work

The main solo work to be featured this year is ‘Bestowal of a Century’, by Christopher Bond — a tenor horn concerto written by the talented young Camborne composer for Lowenna Taylor.

Lowenna, is a former member of the band and winner of a prestigious Harry Mortimer Memorial Bursary Award, which she used to commission the work.

Lowenna, who has played with both Cory and Tredegar amongst other leading bands in recent years will give the premiere at the Band’s Gala Concert at St Michael’s Church, Newquay on 30th December.

Christopher took inspiration for the work from the 2013 centenary celebrations of the presentation of the Royal Trophy to the famous West of England Bandsman’s Festival at Bugle4BR
