Dad takes daughter's lead to win familiy fortunes

The father and daughter Williams team from Bontnewydd have been picking up the silverware in North Wales...

Dylan and Ela Haf Williams

There was something of a family celebration to be had at the North Wales Brass Band Association Solo, Duet & Quartet Championship in Caernarfon on the weekend.

Dusted off

Dylan Williams and his 11 year old daughter Ela Haf from Bontnewydd, both competed together for the very first time — as Dylan dusted off his cornet after 20 years inactivity.

Ela is the former cornet soloist of the successful Bontnewydd Primary School Brass Band, whilst her Dad has enjoyed a successful conducting career of late. Now, both are members of the Deiniolen Band and it seems Dad is following in his daughters musical footsteps.

Ela and Dad first

Ela came runner-up in the Slow Melody age 10-12 category, won the Air Varie under 14 event, and was placed first with her friends in the under 14 Quartet.

Duet triumph

However, not to be outshone, Dad then competed in the Open Slow Melody and Open Air Varie events and claimed first prize in both, whilst his quartet also triumphed.

To top the day off, Ela and Dylan joined forces and claimed first prize in the Open Duet category, playing ‘Calon Lan’.
