Hatfield to pay tribute to former MD

The Hatfield Band will pay a fine musical tribute to a great former MD next month — helped by Stan Lippeatt and Richard Marshall

The Hatfield Band, based in the small former mining town on the outskirts of Doncaster, is to present a wonderful tribute concert in memory of one of the regions' most popular brass band musicians who passed away last year.

Ken Johnson

Ken Johnson (above)was the MD of the Hatfield Band during the 1980's and 1990's and was also a founder of the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Junior Band.

His amazing brass band career took in the Salvation Army, as well as playing soprano with the likes of Ransome & Marles and Grimethorpe Colliery Bands. He became a stalwart of the banding movement in Yorkshire and a wonderful teacher.

His influence on the banding movement spanned generations and helped inspire hundreds of players — such as featured guest soloist for the evening, Richard Marshall.
