Next stop Brecon on Cory Welsh Tour

Philip Harper and Cory will be stopping off in Brecon this weekend on the latest leg of their popular Welsh Tour.

Welsh Tour

Cory will continue on its popular 'Welsh Tour' this Saturday (16th July) when they make a stop off at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon.

The band's concert in the mid-Wales town will also feature the Cory Academy Band, made up of 15 talented youngsters from various Rhondda-based youth bands. These benefit from tuition on a weekly basis from Cory players, and also include members of the Cory Youth Band, run by flugel star Helen Williams.

New music

Helen told 4BR: "The Cory Youth Band have been enjoying working on new music and meeting up at several Cory Academy Workshop days. As you can imagine, they are all so excited at being able to play on stage with the world's number 1 ranked band."

Cory will feature works as diverse as 'A Moorside Suite' to Alberto Ginastera's 'Malambo', as well showcasing their world-class stable of soloists — including Tom Hutchinson, Ailsa Russell, Glyn Williams and Chris Thomas.

Great occasion

MD Philip Harper told 4BR: "The 'Welsh Tour' is already proving to be a huge success and the Brecon concert should also be a great musical occasion, especially with the inclusion of the Cory Academy Band.

It has been one of the most important developments during my time as Musical Director, as it encourages and develops our next generation of brass players at a time when music provision is being cut at so many different levels."

Welsh Prom

Philip added: "After the Brecon gig, we have one more concert before taking a well-earned Summer break at the Welsh Proms in Cardiff.

The band will be conducted by Owain Arwel-Hughes on Wagner's 'Entry of the Gods into Valhalla', Dvorak's 'Carnival Overture', Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' and Walton's 'Crown Imperial' — so the players will need to lie down for a month after that!"
