Influential music blog spotlights brass band movement boundaries

Composer Liz Lane has used her guest editorship of the 'The Sampler' music blog in the leading Sound and Music on-line publication to highlight how and why the brass band movement must continue to break traditional boundaries.

The importance of the collaboration that led to the ballet Dark Arteries is highlighted

The views of four leading commentators on the brass banding world and an international renowned brass soloist have been featured in the latest edition of 'The Sampler', the new music blog produced by the influential Sound and Music publication.

Different aspects

This month's edition was edited by the highly respected composer Liz Lane, who decided to shine a light on different aspects of the brass band movement through her blog, entitled, 'Beyond Traditional Brass Band Boundaries'.

Freelance writer Chris Thomas examined the topic of 'Crossing the Classical Divide' — and the vital need for the brass band medium to forge new connections and relationships with classical musicians and composers, whilst, 4BR Editor Iwan Fox looked back at one such successful collaboration — the hugely important Rambert Ballet production 'Dark Arteries' by Gavin Higgins, which was premiered at Sadler's Wells in 2015.

Paul Hindmarsh profiled the vital role and the critically acclaimed success of the RNCM Brass Band Festival, with British Bandsman Editor Kenneth Crookston offering his opinion of whether or not original brass band music could be heading for museum status.

International euphonium star David Childs took a more positive look at the opportunities that are now available for performers in crossing the disconnect between the brass band and classical music worlds.
