November's edition is packed out with title winning features...

The November edition of the Brass Band World magazine is now out, and it's packed with fantastic features, articles, reviews and interviews from around the globe…

Features:

BRASS BANDS ENGLAND RECRUITS:

Brass Bands England (BBE) is poised to change the landscape of English brass banding and is starting by creating two new salaried positions with professional-level expertise: a Development / Training / Education officer and a Marketing / Communications / Commercial officer, the recruitment adverts for which appear in the November edition of BBW.

LET'S DEBATE: POWER IN THE HANDS OF BANDS:

Adam Goldsmith, Producer and Senior Recording Engineer for World of Sound, which has recorded ten of the nominees for BBW's 2017 Recording Awards, surveys the fast-moving changes to the audio and video recording landscape, from hard copy to digital consumption.

THE BBW INTERVIEW: 'THE PROFUNDITY AND SINCERITY OF THE MUSIC IS ALL THAT REMAINS':

One of the most dynamic figures in worldwide brass banding, Professor David King, recently returned to his native Australia with yet another title conquest — this time the British 'National'.

However, for the man dubbed 'the green boy from the brown land' when he arrived on British shores, musical greatness lies not in record-breaking statistics, but in the process of making music and educating musicians, as David Childs discovered when he caught up with the maestro.

'THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC BRIGHOUSE':

Led by Professor David King, Brighouse and Rastrick notched up its tenth British National last month against the backdrop of an intriguing and musically compelling contest on Howard Snell's test-piece, Gallery, that emerged as one of the closest-fought battles in recent National Final history. BBW's Chief Contributor, Christopher Thomas, brings the detail.

YOUNG VOICES:

It's a bit of a Brighouse edition this month, as Mark Good meets one of the band's rising talents — 18-year-old trombonist, Ellena Newton.

NEW EUROPEAN ORDER HEADS FOR UTRECHT:

Thomas Dunne brings coverage of the first three National contests taking place across Europe, plus Norway's SIDDIS entertainment contest, where the older order was pretty much evident in Denmark and Norway, but toppled in Holland and Austria.

'WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE?':

Harmen Vanhoorne and Stan Nieuwenhuis have just held a very special launch of Harmen's new CD, doux — Ellis Island, with the strong political message about immigration: 'Who are we to judge?'

BBW'S CD AWARD 2017:

The time has arrive for BBW's red-carpet CD of the Year accolades — who has won the Band and Solo CD of the Year awards and who has scooped a BBW 'Out of the Box' Award?

BBW CENTRE BAND — TALES OF THE NORTH SEA:

Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag has just achieved the triple crown — the Norwegian National, the European and SIDDIS. The Norwegian band now heads to Gateshead with its SIDDIS-winning programme, Tales of the North Sea, to tilt at the title.

VOICE FROM THE PAST:

The fascinating transcript of a previously unpublished interview with the late trumpeter, conductor and educator of international repute, James Watson, by Lisa Fitzgerald-Lombard.

PRO PLATFORM — SOUND ADVICE:

Professor Roger Webster looks at the age-old question of what constitutes a good sound and issues a warning about the vexed issue of vibrato.

BBW CASTAWAY:

BBW's November Castaway is perennial Brass in Concert favourite — 'Dick the Stick' Richard Evans, who selects some real tearjerkers for his desert island listening!
