Keith Leonard has announced his retirement as Musical Director of Derwent Brass.

The Derbyshire band was formed in 1992, with Keith arriving the following year — a move that saw him become the driving force that led them from the depths of the Third Section to become one of the most respected and well run top-flight bands in the Midlands.

Innovation

Under his direction Derwent also gained a well deserved reputation for musical innovation, working with the likes of composers Paul McGhee, Matt Eden and more latterly with Paul Lovatt-Cooper.

Keith told 4BR: "Derwent has been a massive part of my life for the past 25 years and there have been many occasions when work or domestic life should have taken precedence, but didn't!

As I've often announced from the stage at the end of concerts, I'm proud to have been the conductor of a wonderful band, both in terms of camaraderie and musical ability, and hope I've been instrumental in creating the band we have today."

Passion

Keith's commitment ran to every aspect of the organisation, helped and supported by his wife Beverley, who he now finally hopes to be able to spend much more time with.

In response to the news, Band Chairman, Graham Johnson told 4BR: "We recognise we're unlikely to find another Keith Leonard and, in a way, we wouldn't want that.

His passion for brass band music wasn't constrained by the normal boundaries of repertoire, as shown his support for contemporary composers. His has been a quite exceptional musical tenure and we cannot thank him enough for what he has done for us."

Thanks

As the finale to the band's recent 25th anniversary concert, Keith engaged Paul Lovatt-Cooper to write a new commission: 'Beyond Heaven's Gates: Life and Soul', which reflected his belief that musical success was more than contest winning success, but the ability of like minded people to make music together.

As Band President, Neville Eden added: "Keith's commitment and dedication to Derwent Brass has been outstanding, and we thank him for everything he has done."
