Radio: The World of Brass

After months of hard work a new brass band radio programme reaches the airwaves in South Africa

Nick Plummer is broadcasting brass bands on Fine Radio Music in South Africa

The World of Brass

The first ever brass band radio programme broadcast in South Africa has hit the airwaves — and has been met with a great response.

It's the culmination of months of hard work by presenter Nick Plummer, a former Sellers Engineering Band tuba player who broadcasts on Cape Town's classical music radio station, Fine Music Radio ( www.fmr.co.za) and has been connecting with a fledgling brass band community over the last 10 years with his occasional brass band spotlights.

13 week run

However, he now presents a 1 hour long programme for a 13 week run dedicated to all things brass banding at 6.30pm (BST).

Speaking to 4BR, Nick said: "The hard work has paid off — and we've already had a greet response following the first broadcast.

It really shows how many brass players and fans there are in South Africa and how eager they are to hear more top class bands perform."

Exciting time

He added: "It's such an exciting time and we will be featuring the likes of Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, William Fairey, Yorkshire Building Society, Besses o' th' Barn, Sellers Engineering and Foden's.

We are also looking for bands to send us CDs so that we can build up a great stock of expanding repertoire — so please get in touch!"

If you would like your band's recordings to be included in the programme, please contact nick@fmr.co.za
