In the second of the 4BR 'Legends of Brass' series, 4BR went to Huntington in Cambridgeshire to meet David Read MBE.

In the first part of a two-part interview, David talks about his playing career — from the early days of Askern Colliery in Yorkshire, to his spell in the Welsh Guards playing with Roland Cobb and his years at Carlton Main Frickley.

He talks about the way in which he was approached to join GUS (Footwear) under the great Stanley Boddington, how he asked Gilbert Vinter to write a quartet for him and his colleagues and how he finally enjoyed a spell with Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
