The death has been announced of the popular Yorkshire bandsman Peter Sanderson.

Peter played with many of the region's bands over the years including Upton Colliery, Frickley South Elmsall, Stanley Newmarket and Tingley Brass, and was an avid supporter of Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band where his son Jonathan played for almost 23 years.

He died aged 78, at Pinderfields Hospital on Monday 26th, November.

From the navy to the Main

Peter started playing the soprano before joining the Navy, during which time he served on HMS Ark Royal. He later trained as an electrician and worked for the National Coal Board at South Kirkby Colliery.

His passion for brass bands continued, eventually ending up playing the tuba during his long association with Frickley South Elmsall before also conducting bands around West Yorkshire.

Peter retired from playing in 2016 due to eyesight problems, although he and his wife Ann remained in contact with the band world by continuing to follow Carlton Main to concerts and contests at home and abroad, including the World Championships in 2017 and French Open 2018.

Brass in Concert

A Carlton Main Frickley spokesperson told 4BR: "Peter was at the recent Brass in Concert Championship to see the band gain their highest ever finish at the leading event before heading across to see his son's new business in Keswick.

He will be sadly missed by all his friends in the brass band movement and our thoughts are with his wife Ann, son Jonathan and his family."

Funeral details

Peter's funeral will be held at 3.00pm on Wednesday 19th December at Pontefract Crematorium.

A band, consisting of many of his former colleagues and friends, will perform in his honour.

The family have asked for family flowers only, and that contributions should be made to Take Heart (Leeds General Infirmary) and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band.
