Yorkshire youngsters continue to enjoy their musical diet

Over 50 young players in the Yorkshire Youth Band continue to enjoy fun, hard work and great music under the baton of Black Dyke Director of Music Prof Nicholas Childs.

Yorkshire Youth
The latest course was packed full of talent, fun, hard work and great music...

The talented youngsters of the Yorkshire Youth Band enjoyed a menu of hard work, great music and plenty of fun on their latest gathering in Saddleworth on the weekend.

Led by Black Dyke Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs and supported by Besson Musical Instruments, a wide variety of music was performed, including Peter Graham's 'Heroes of the North', Jonathan Bates' 'Repton Fantasy' and Philip Harper's 'Greatest Storyteller'.

Dyke stars

Black Dyke's principal cornet Richard Marshall also took to the baton, whilst expert tuition came from Queensbury stars Dan Thomas, Dave Smith, Alison Childs, John O'Brien, Adam Neild, Dave McGlynn and Neil Edwards.

Over 50 young musicians took part, with the logistics and organisation expertly handled by Course Administrators Alison and Rebecca Childs.

After a morning of sectional rehearsals and full band, the students were involved in a masterclass from Dan Thomas which looked at the importance of correct breath control and the need to warm up and down. The day ended with a final rehearsal before the short concert for parents and friends.

Progress

Richard Marshall was delighted with the development the youngsters are making: "The players are really rising to the challenges in front of them — and the progress is excellent," he said.

"That's what makes the Yorkshire Youth Band such a rewarding experience — everyone benefits, especially the players who go back to their own bands with such enthusiasm and new learning."

Each course consists of massed warm-ups, sectionals, full band, masterclass, Q&A sessions, tutoring and advice, plus an end of day concert.

New members

Meanwhile, Alison Childs told 4BR that she was especially delighted that new members are enjoying the band this year.

"It is always wonderful to welcome new players and to see them relishing in an atmosphere that is inclusive and full of encouragement.

The Yorkshire Youth Band continues to go from strength to strength as the youngsters develop and with the Brass Festival on the 2nd June at Leeds Town Hall, with the support of Besson Musical Instruments, we can help the future stars reach their potential."
