4BR has been informed that the North of England Regional Championships will go ahead as planned this weekend in Durham.

Statement made

In a statement to made BY Regional Secretary Tony Griffiths, he said that the organisers have acted upon advice for appropriate sources.

"We are all aware now of the recent issues with the Coronavirus and possible issues that this will bring. Many people have called for events such as ours to be cancelled as well as other gatherings such as sporting fixtures and social events.

As organisers of the NOEBBC we can only take advice from those who are qualified to give it.

I have been in contact with the Gala Theatre in Durham over this week as well as taking government advice via their website, culminating in communications with the management team, at the Gala late this afternoon (Thursday 12th March)

We were also waiting for the UK government statement on this issue. This now has been made.

Advice

He added: "Now we know what stage the virus progression is at, we can follow the advice of the Government not to cancel events such as ours at this stage. The Gala Management has not cancelled any shows etc. and do not plan to do so at this point.

The Regional Championships will therefore go ahead, but I hope that each individual will look at their personal circumstances and take sensible decisions relating to this issue that is best for them.

We will try and minimize any risk to bandsmen and women and their supporters over the weekend and will restrict the number of bands in studio one prior to their performance. Please take sensible precautions to help us all."

Timings

He concluded: "A full list of approximate timings will be issued at the draw so bands can arrive when they need to do so. It goes without saying that personal hygiene, especially hand washing helps reduce the risk.

If anyone has any problems over this issue please let me know and we will try our upmost to help if we can.

This week has presented me with unprecedented issues and increased work. I thank you all for your continued support. Best wishes to all this weekend."
