Over 60 performers took part in the on-line competition run by the Belgian champion

Brassband Willebroek has announced the results of its first on-line solo competition.

Such was the success of the initiative that 61 brass players from Belgium and the Netherlands took part by sending in their video performances. The organisers were delighted with the response and especially by the inventive way in which many added self-isolated accompaniment.

Each of the participants will now receive a report from the three respected adjudicators from Brassband Willebroek — Musical Director Frans Violet and fellow Royal Conservatoire Antwerp tutors, Kevin Van Giel and Lode Violet.

Admiration

Speaking about his admiration for all entries, Frans Violet told 4BR: "The level of playing was extremely high. It was not always easy to choose a top three. In some categories we could just as easily have picked a top 10!

I'm amazed that our young musicians continue to maintain such a high standard. That means that during this lockdown period their teachers are doing a great job, with the online communication technologies that are available today."

He added: "We sincerely hope that all these talents will continue to play and to develop themselves, at a time when no musical group activities are allowed to take place at all."

Best Performance

The overall prize for 'Best Performance' was awarded to Eb tuba player Niels Lukkesen. He will receive an invitation to perform as a soloist, accompanied by Brassband Willebroek, at one of their next concerts.
