Cory launches 2023 Composition Competition

If you want to write a work to be performed by the world's number 1 ranked band then make sure you enter their 2023 Composition Competition.

Cory Competion
The closing date for entries is 1st September

Cory Band and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWMCD) has announced the launch of its 2023 composition competition.

It is the seventh time it has been held, with entrants hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous winners such as composers Andrew Wainwright, Andy Wareham and 2022 recipient Ben Fuller, who have been able to use the prestige of the award to further their careers.

Details

Applications are invited to submit new pieces of no more than 5 minutes duration with a closing date of 1st September.

A shortlist of four works will be chosen, all of which will be rehearsed and recorded by the world's number 1 ranked band at the RWCMD in November, with a series of short programmes broadcast on their YouTube channel soon after.

A public vote alongside the verdict of three judges will determine the winning entry, which will subsequently be added to Cory's concert programmes as well as being published by Wright & Round.

The winning entrant will receive a cheque for £300 sponsored by partners sponsors New Moon Insurance.

Creating opportunities

Speaking about the latest edition of the competition which attracts entries from across the musical world, MD, Philip Harper said: "Creating opportunities for new music is something which is important to Cory Band.

Last year's competition was particularly strong, and we're excited to see what this year's composers come up with.

We're delighted once again to be able to offer the chance for tens of thousands of band fans all over the world to take part by enjoying the performances and voting."

The support of New Moon Insurance shows belief in the brass band movement, the creation of new work and mentorship for aspiring musicians. The RWCMD is committed to nurturing and supporting the future of the brass band movement, and our role in identifying and supporting young talent."

Those sentiments were echoed by Paul Crump of New Moon Insurance: "We're delighted to continue our partnership with Cory Band. It is important that we work to support each other and develop new talent and opportunities for all involved in banding."
