Gifford's lead at Sovereign closes

The successful musical partnership between Sovereign Brass and MD Alan Gifford has come to an end.

Sovereign
The band enjoyed a great deal of contesting success

A job move to Kent has meant that the musical partnership between Sovereign Brass and Musical Director Alan Gifford has come to an end.

Since accepting the role in September 2022 Alan has led the Midlanders through one of its most exciting and successful period of recent years culminating a return to the Championship Section.

Victories

During his tenure the band won the Midlands Regional First Section title in 2023 going on to become runner-up at the Cheltenham National Final. They also claimed the Wychavon Entertainment First Section as well as becoming the inaugural ConsTest competition winner, successfully defending the title earlier this year.

He was also responsible for generating new activities and relationships including the critically acclaimed 'Sovereign Series' concerts, the appointment of Composer in Association, Fendall Hill and the release of the band's first CD in over 20 years.

Thanks

Band Chairperson Phil Green told 4BR: "Our heartfelt thanks go to Alan for the amazing journey he's taken us on over the last two years.

We're saddened that our current relationship with him is ending, though it won't be the last time we work together as we're planning to collaborate on specific projects for Alan to lead as an Associate to the band.

We also wish to place on record our thanks to Trevor Jones, who has been working with in Alan's absence, and will continue to do so until an announcement regarding Alan's replacement is made."

Thanks

In response, Alan told 4BR: "My new musical role with Kent Music Service means extensive travel and makes the MD role at Sovereign untenable.

I'd like to thank the band for all their hard work, support, and belief in me over the last two years, and especially the support and guidance from senior players. It's been an incredibly satisfying time for me personally, one I'm sad to be drawing to a close."
