A little band with a big future at Menai Bridge

130 years of brass band music making was celebrated by Menai Bridge Band Porthaethwy

Menai Bridge Band Porthaethwy recently celebrated its 130th anniversary with the past, present and future of the band all playing a part.

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Arts organisation Ty Cerdd, the three bands that make up the Anglesey based organisation were able to enjoy a series of sectional workshops and rehearsals before giving a short concert in a local primary school.

Band Bach

The day linked both former and current members with the next generation of players by playing together in their 'Band Bach' (Welsh for little band).

Professional trumpeter Gwyn Owen, Grenadier Guardsman Morgan Marston, leader of Llareggub Band Owain Roberts, Black Dyke star Gavin Saynor, plus Codi'r To/Sistema Cymru's percussion specialist Iolo Hughes worked with almost 60 members to pass on their knowledge, skills and tips.

Spirit of Brass

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "The workshops and concert were free to anyone to attend with individual items performed by each band before the massed group performed 'Spirit of Brass' with an enthusiastic encore of the 'Final Countdown' featuring the Band Bach!"

This event also marked the return to musical action of long time MD Chris Williams after a short sabbatical due to spinal surgery. During his absence the band was grateful to have been able to work with Peter Cowlishaw and Dyfed Jones.
