The second episode of the new Radio 3 series 'Brass Banding with Hannah Peel' was aired on Sunday evening (May 4th at 8.00pm).

Trombones and Tibetan bells

Entitled, 'Trombones and Tibetan bells' it featured music by John Ireland, Lucy Pankhurst, Stijn Aertgeerts, Gordon Langford, Viskamol Chaiwanichsiri, Colin Skinner, Stuart Dempster and George Gershwin.

The interview guest was Peter Moore who was featured playing Langford's 'Rhapsody for Trombone' which he calls "a real masterpiece for the instrument", who spoke about his connection to the brass banding world.

Thrilled

Speaking to 4BR, presenter Hannah Peel said: "I'm thrilled to be presenting this new series, exploring music, not just from our much loved UK brass bands, but areas in the world where it is equally thriving. From archival recordings to new works and even discovering those who are pushing the boundaries of its sound.

Not many people know I grew up playing trombone in brass bands! It's such an addictive sound world. I can't pass a band playing without waves of overwhelming nostalgia; from the band room smell to the heightened feelings when everyone in the room gets the piece/the breath, perfectly in time together."

Community

Hannah added: "The community around this music is just as important as the playing, so it's been fabulous to go into the band rooms and meet those involved — hear their experiences and favourite piece recommendations.

I hope those that don't know this sound world, find our new show as fascinating as those who know it inside out!"
